Dysport vs Botox: what differs and how to choose

Updated September 2026

Dysport and Botox are the two wrinkle relaxers patients ask about most, and the honest answer is that they are more alike than different. Both are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A products that temporarily relax the small muscles behind expression lines. Where they differ is in their approved areas, how their results develop and last, and how their units are counted, and those details shape which one your injector recommends. This guide walks through each difference, how Belle Vie prices both, and what to expect at your visit to our Cerritos studio or our Costa Mesa studio.

Dysport vs Botox at a glance

  • Active ingredient: botulinum toxin type A in both, as two different prescription products.
  • FDA-approved areas: Botox for frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet; Dysport for frown lines.
  • Onset: changes with either product may begin within the first few days and keep developing over the following weeks.
  • Duration: temporary for both; up to about four months for Botox in the upper face and up to about five months for Dysport frown-line treatment, with individual variation.
  • Units: specific to each product and not interchangeable, so per-unit figures cannot be compared.
  • Price: compare the total for your treatment plan, which your injector confirms before treatment.

How Dysport and Botox work

Both products contain the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, prepared as two different prescription products. When a small amount is placed in a targeted muscle, it interrupts the signal that tells that muscle to contract. The muscle relaxes, and the line that forms when you frown, squint, or raise your brows becomes less noticeable.

Neither product is permanent. The effect fades gradually over a few months as the muscle regains its activity, which is why wrinkle relaxers are planned as ongoing care rather than a one-time fix.

FDA-approved areas

This is the clearest difference on paper.

  • Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved for three areas of the upper face: the frown lines between the brows (glabellar lines), horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet beside the eyes.
  • Dysport is FDA-approved for moderate to severe frown lines between the brows (glabellar lines) in adults younger than 65.

Approved indications are one of the factors your injector weighs. Your provider assesses which areas are appropriate for you at your consultation, so if you have a specific area in mind, bring it up then.

Onset: how soon you see a change

Neither product works instantly, and the difference between them is smaller than many patients expect. With Botox, changes may begin in one to two days and continue developing over the first month. With Dysport, some patients notice improvement within the first few days. In both cases the result settles in over the following weeks, so judge it once it has developed, around the two-week mark, rather than on day three. Individual response varies, and a first-time patient may respond differently than someone who has been treated for years. Your injector will tell you when to assess your response and arrange a follow-up if needed.

Duration: how long results last

Both are temporary. Botox results in the upper face can last up to about four months. Dysport results may last up to about five months for frown lines, though the timing varies by patient and treatment. The brand is only one input; the dose used, the strength of the muscle treated, and how consistently you maintain treatment all matter. Your injector will suggest a follow-up window based on how you respond.

Placement and precision

Patients often ask whether one product is better for broad areas and the other for small ones. Some injectors have a preference for one product across a wider area such as the forehead and the other where precision matters, such as near the brow or beside the eyes. What matters more than the brand is the plan: how many injection points, how deep, and how much in each. With either product, placement, dose and depth are tailored to your face and your facial movement; individual results vary.

Units are not interchangeable

This is the point that causes the most confusion when patients compare prices. Units are specific to each product: a Dysport unit and a Botox unit are measured on different scales, so a comparable treatment typically calls for a different number of units of each. The Botox and Dysport unit counts you see quoted cannot be compared directly.

That means a per-unit price tells you almost nothing on its own. A lower per-unit figure for one product does not mean a lower total. The only fair comparison is the total for your treatment plan: the areas being treated, the dose your injector recommends, and the resulting price for the visit, which your injector confirms before treatment.

How Belle Vie prices wrinkle relaxers

Both Botox and Dysport are priced per unit at Belle Vie, and your injector confirms the total before anything is injected. A typical first visit runs about $250 to $600 depending on how many areas you treat and the dose you need. Current pricing is listed on the online booking menu when you choose your studio.

Beauty Vault members receive member pricing on wrinkle relaxers all year, and 100% of monthly dues bank as treatment credit. 12-month term; eligibility and exclusions apply; compare plans.

How your injector chooses

There is no universally better product. At your consultation, your Belle Vie injector weighs three things:

  • Your past response. If you have had one product before and liked the onset, duration, and feel, that is a strong reason to stay with it. If it faded faster than you hoped or felt uneven, switching may be worth trying.
  • The area. Approved indications factor in, and so does your injector’s experience with each product in the area you want treated.
  • The look you want. Some patients want movement preserved with lines softened; others want a smoother finish. Product and dose are set to match that preference.

Read more about each on our Botox and Dysport pages, or start with the goal itself: softer lines.

Jeuveau: the third option

Belle Vie also offers Jeuveau, a third botulinum toxin type A wrinkle relaxer that some patients simply prefer. All three are available at both studios, and your provider explains the differences in approved uses and your past response before recommending one for your goals.

What to expect at your visit

Plan on a short appointment. Your injector assesses your expressions, reviews your health history and any prior wrinkle-relaxer treatment, and discusses placement, dose, and the total cost. The treatment itself is a series of small injections into selected muscles; most patients describe brief pinches, and the appointment includes time to talk through aftercare. There is no downtime for most people, though temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or a small bruise at an injection point can occur, and some patients notice a mild headache. Your injector gives you simple aftercare instructions and tells you when to assess your response.

Bruising, headache, and eyelid or brow drooping are possible side effects with any wrinkle relaxer. Rarely, the effect of the toxin can spread beyond the treated area and cause serious swallowing, speaking, or breathing problems; seek immediate medical care if you experience these symptoms.

Who should wait

Wrinkle relaxers are not right for everyone at every moment. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant; treatment is generally deferred. Certain muscle or nerve conditions can make treatment inappropriate, and some medications matter, so share your full medical history and medication list. Dysport specifically is not suitable for people with an allergy to cow’s milk protein or its other ingredients. Your provider will tell you whether treatment is appropriate now or better postponed.
