Hollywood Carbon Facial vs chemical peels: what's the difference?

Updated September 2026

If you have searched for a Hollywood facial, you have probably seen chemical peels recommended for the same concerns: dullness, uneven tone, congested pores and rough texture. The two reach a brighter complexion by very different routes. The Hollywood Carbon Facial pairs a carbon lotion with a laser pass and sends you back to your day with little to no downtime. VI Peel and BioRePeel use acid-based solutions to exfoliate, and VI Peel in particular asks you to plan for several days of visible peeling in exchange for more change per session where pigmentation is concerned. Here is how they compare, who each suits and how to choose.

One clarification first. A "Hollywood peel" and a "Hollywood facial" are the same laser treatment, also called a carbon laser facial. If you are weighing it against an IPL photofacial or another laser facial, that comparison lives in our sibling post, Hollywood peel facial vs laser facial. This article is about the carbon facial versus true chemical peels.

How the Hollywood Carbon Facial works

A thin layer of carbon-based lotion is applied to clean skin. A laser then passes over the face and targets the carbon particles. As the laser breaks down the carbon, it lifts away dead skin cells, impurities and excess oil from the pores along with it. Skin looks smoother, clearer and brighter, and pores appear more refined. It stays superficial, so the treatment is gentle, non-invasive and suitable for most skin types. Little to no downtime and minimal side effects are typical. The brightening effect is short-term, so think of it as a maintenance visit or a pre-event polish rather than a one-time fix. Your provider can recommend how often to repeat it based on your skin and goals. Individual results vary. The Hollywood Carbon Facial is offered at our Cerritos studio; read more on the Hollywood Carbon Facial page.

How chemical peels work

A chemical peel uses an acid-based solution to exfoliate the outer layers of skin over the days that follow. We offer two: VI Peel and BioRePeel. VI Peel comes in several formulas, including Original, Advanced and Precision + Peptides, and your provider selects the one that fits your skin and concern. Visible peeling commonly begins around day three and lasts several days. BioRePeel is a 30-minute treatment; how much your skin sheds afterward varies by formula, and less visible peeling does not necessarily mean the treatment did not work. Peels are the more assertive option for the appearance of uneven pigmentation, rough surface texture and the discoloration left behind by breakouts, and they generally deliver more change per session than a carbon facial. Individual results vary.

The differences at a glance

  • What it is: the carbon facial is a laser treatment; VI Peel and BioRePeel are acid-based chemical exfoliation.
  • Downtime: little to none with the carbon facial; with VI Peel, plan for several days of visible peeling starting around day three.
  • What you notice: a glow and refined-looking pores from the carbon facial; a more even-looking tone and smoother surface from a peel once shedding finishes.
  • Best for: dull, congested or oily skin and pre-event polish (carbon facial); uneven pigmentation, rough texture and post-breakout marks (peel).
  • Where: the Hollywood Carbon Facial is available in Cerritos; peels are offered at both studios.
  • Current pricing: listed on the online booking menu for your studio and confirmed by your provider before treatment.

Who the Hollywood Carbon Facial suits

Because it stays superficial and suits most skin types, the carbon facial is often the easier first step for someone who has never had a professional skin treatment or who cannot spare a recovery window. It also builds on a wrinkle-relaxer routine with smoother-looking, more radiant skin, which is why many patients fold it into their regular maintenance rhythm.

Who a chemical peel suits

A peel earns its place when discoloration is the concern and you can give your skin several days to shed; VI Peel is the choice for more visible change from one session, while BioRePeel is the shorter, 30-minute option your provider may suggest depending on your skin and goals. Formula selection and preparation matter for sensitive or deeper skin tones, so your provider reviews your skincare, medications, sensitivities and pigment history first. Peels can cause irritation, infection, pigment changes or scarring; tell your provider about allergies, cold sores, recent treatments, pregnancy or breastfeeding and medications, and follow the aftercare rather than pulling at peeling skin.

Downtime, timing and how often

With the carbon facial, you can return to your day straight away, and side effects are typically minimal. With VI Peel, count backward from any event: peeling often starts around day three and continues for several days, so tell us your date and we will help plan the timing. Protect your skin from the sun afterward, especially while it peels. How often to repeat depends on the treatment and your skin: your provider recommends the interval for the carbon facial based on your goals, and sets the spacing between peels based on the formula and how your skin responds.

What it costs

Current pricing for the Hollywood Carbon Facial, VI Peel and BioRePeel is listed on the online booking menu for your studio, and your provider confirms the recommended treatment and total before you begin. Beauty Vault members receive member pricing all year; 12-month term, eligibility and exclusions apply, and you can compare plans.

How to choose

Ask yourself two questions. Is my main concern glow and congestion, or is it discoloration? And can I accept several days of peeling right now? Glow plus no downtime points to the carbon facial; discoloration plus a clear calendar points to a peel. If you are undecided, a complimentary skin consultation is the simplest path: your provider looks at your skin and recommends one, the other or a plan that sequences both.
